Florida Feels the Crunch of Fuel Woes as Truckers Take Action to Protest Rising Fuel Costs

Oklahoma City, OK – April 7, 2008, Truckers in Florida are taking a stance against the continuing rise in the cost of diesel fuel.  With costs at a record high of nearly $4 per gallon, truckers are taking a pro-active approach in sending a message of disapproval.  Many truckers lined their Big Rigs across highways and began reducing speed causing traffic to slow.  They also planned a strike in the next few days.

Some fleet operators are better able to handle rising fuel costs and driver shortages through automation. Huttig Building Products is one of the many companies that have been able to handle the changes by using Direct Route®, Route Optimization Software from Appian Logistics, Inc.

The construction industry was seriously impacted by the housing slowdown in 2007. Record foreclosures, a growing unsold housing inventory, and slowing sales of new homes all contributed to negative growth in the industry nationwide. Huttig successfully managed the downturn and reduced costs, thanks in part, to Appian’s Direct Route® – Route Optimization Software. Direct Route enabled them to match a 25% drop in sales with a 19% reduction in transportation costs, resulting in a savings of $40,000 per month at just one branch. In the past because of Huttig’s fixed route structure, if there was a drop in sales it took several months to manually adjust transportation to match. With Direct Route® they were able to match slowing sales by immediately reducing their delivery operations. The extent to which they could hold delivery cost as a % of sales through both up-turns and down-turns in the market went straight to the bottom line.
